Recycling Saves Energy

Back

Recycling beverage containers into new products uses much less energy than if we made those products from new materials. By recycling, we do not have to mine new resources, refine those resources, and transport them around the world.  This saves energy for other uses, like heating our homes and powering our electronics.  For example, using recycled aluminum cans to make new aluminum cans uses 90% less energy than if you were making the cans from raw bauxite aluminum.  That is because you do not have to mine the new aluminum from the ground in Canada, Australia, China, Brazil, India, or throughout Africa, which uses a lot of energy.

The energy saved from recycling one aluminum can could run a television for three hours, or a 100 watt light bulb for 20 hours!
